ASI Fact Sheet To deliver high quality, specialized services and provide support to individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families in a respectful and professional manner. We are committed to teaching skills that will provide a foundation for our individuals to become independent, productive, and integral members of the community to the best of their abilities. Independence is maximized through educational, residential and day habilitation programs, as well as cultural, and vocational opportunities that include various community partnerships.
Autistic Services, Inc.’s continued mission objectives are:
• To develop and promote meaningful educational opportunities in order to support advancement in all areas of functioning and to value independence at its highest level.
• To support and encourage self-advocacy efforts among our individuals, and provide advocacy services for those unable to do so on their own behalf.
• To assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families in development and attainment of personal goals and objectives
• To promote societal awareness of the nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
• To advance the inclusion of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the more general population of society and to promote the normalization of the roles adopted therein.
• To uphold the rights of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and to ensure the effective and appropriate provision of services.
Facts on Autism and Autistic Services
• As of 2008 current diagnostics on Autism incidents estimates that 1 out of every 150th person is on the Autism Spectrum. Based on current population stats in Greater Buffalo, this places local estimates at approximately 2,000 individuals on the Autism Spectrum and over 16,000 in the Western New York Area.
• The male/female ratio for Autism is 4:1, making Autism 4-5 times more prevalent in males than in females.
• Autism is a developmental disability, which usually begins before 3 years of age and is a life-long disability. People with Autism have a normal life span.
• Research indicates that people with Autism learn best through a structured environment, and that the earlier the intervention, the better for people with Autism.
• Autism occurs within all socioeconomic classes.
• Autistic Services, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Angela Lagenor. The agency is now run by Executive Director, Veronica Federiconi.
• Autistic Services, Inc. sponsors a Self-Advocacy Group for people who are on the Autism Spectrum.
• Autistic Services, Inc. maintains a 12-month Education Program, a Day Habilitation Program, a Residential Program with several independent sites, Service Coordination, Supported Employment, a Supplemental Day Hab Program, an After School Program, Camp, and a Therapeutic Recreation Program for children (TRAC).
• As of 2008, Autistic Services, Inc. employs over 250 people.
• Autistic Services, Inc. continues to assist individuals with Autism in areas of employment and community volunteering.
